Why do I keep doing this?

Today we are beginning a brand new series exploring how to heal the patterns that keep you stuck. I want to begin with a question that you have likely asked yourself more than once in your life. Why do I keep doing this? Why do I keep saying yes when I want to say no? Why do I keep procrastinating on things that matter? Why do I second guess myself or shut down during difficult moments? You might even follow those frustrating thoughts by asking what is wrong with me. Today I want to invite you to ask a completely different question. Instead of asking what is wrong with me, ask what is this pattern trying to do for me. Sometimes the behavior you are frustrated with is not the root problem at all. It is actually your protection.

As we journey through greater self awareness, we begin noticing things we previously overlooked. We notice the exact moments when we abandon our own truth. We notice when fear makes a decision before we can even consider what we truly want. We notice when we make ourselves smaller or seek constant approval. Awareness can feel uncomfortable because once you see a pattern, it is difficult to unhide it. However, awareness is never meant to be another reason to judge yourself. Awareness gives you an opportunity to understand yourself, and true understanding creates meaningful choice.

When we talk about a pattern, we are referring to a response that has become completely familiar. Something happens and you automatically respond in a specific way. Maybe conflict appears and you immediately withdraw. Someone expresses disappointment and you rush to fix it. An opportunity arrives and your mind immediately focuses on everything that could possibly go wrong. These responses rarely appear out of nowhere. At some point in your past, they served a vital purpose. Staying quiet helped you avoid painful conflict. Being exceptionally capable earned you much needed approval. Anticipating everyone else needs helped you feel safe. When a strategy works even temporarily, your mind and body remember it. The response becomes familiar and the familiar becomes automatic. Eventually that automatic response begins to feel like your actual identity. However, there is a vital distinction to remember. The pattern is simply something you learned how to do. It is not who you are at your core.

This brings us to a fascinating dilemma where protection eventually becomes limitation. Something can protect you at one stage of your life and become the exact thing limiting you at a later stage. Imagine that somewhere along your journey you learned that you must never disappoint anyone. That belief maintained important connections and kept the peace. So you became an expert at noticing what everyone else needed. Years later you are still doing it, except now you say yes while completely exhausted, you struggle to set healthy boundaries, and you feel overwhelming guilt whenever someone is disappointed. The pattern worked brilliantly until it stopped working, and that is why simply telling yourself to stop people pleasing is rarely enough. Beneath that behavior lies a deeper belief that if you disappoint someone you might lose connection entirely. Knowing something intellectually does not automatically change an older response that operates in the background.

One of the most frustrating parts of personal growth is understanding a truth in your mind while struggling to live it out in your daily life. You can know you need rest. You can know you deserve boundaries. You can know you are deeply capable. Yet something inside you still hesitates and hits the brakes. Knowing what you want to do does not make the old response instantly vanish. That is why curiosity is so profoundly important. Instead of criticizing yourself for repeating a habit, try asking what happened inside your spirit just before you took that action.

Patterns carry a very distinct energy. Think about what happens in your body when a familiar pattern activates. Your chest might tighten, your stomach might drop, or your shoulders might tense up. Your mind might start racing through worst case scenarios. Your body often recognizes patterns long before your conscious mind has named them. Becoming energetically aware is crucial work because your energy gives you vital information. When you learn to notice that information, you create valuable space between the trigger and the response. Inside that sacred space, you hold the power to choose.

Consider a simple everyday scenario. A friend sends a text asking to talk. Suddenly your stomach tightens and your mind races with worry. Did I do something wrong? Are they upset with me? Your body reacts before anything has even happened. Imagine if instead of following the panic story, you pause. You notice the physical tightness, you notice the fearful thoughts, and you ask what you are truly afraid of. When you trace the fear to its root, you are no longer reacting to a simple text message. You are touching the core pattern, and that awareness changes everything.

This week, try a simple practice when you notice a familiar pattern arising. First, catch it without judgment. Ask yourself four gentle questions. What happened in the external situation? What did I feel emotionally and physically? What did I automatically do in response? What was I ultimately trying to protect in that moment? You do not need to force an answer. Simply asking the question begins to loosen the grip of the pattern. Compassion is not the same as permission. Understanding why a pattern developed does not mean you must keep letting it run your life. Awareness gives you a better place from which to take responsibility so you can choose a different path.

Choose just one pattern this week to observe with gentle curiosity. Notice when it appears, take a deep grounding breath, and ask what it is trying to protect. Listen closely to what arises.
