The Power of the Pause: Why do I keep reacting the way that I do?

Have you ever found yourself reacting instinctively to a situation, only to wonder later why you responded that way? Perhaps someone made a critical comment, and before you could think twice, you felt defensive. Or maybe you agreed to help someone, even though your gut was screaming no. These reactions can feel automatic, and understanding why they occur is the first step toward transformation.

Understanding Automatic Reactions

Many of our responses are shaped by past experiences. They stem from learned behaviors—like the belief that keeping others happy ensures our safety, or that conflict leads to rejection. Over time, these beliefs can create patterns that dominate our reactions, often without us even realizing it.

For instance, you might have learned that being helpful grants you value, or perhaps you became the strong one in your circle, managing everything while suppressing your own feelings. These patterns, while protective at one point, can turn into automatic responses that no longer serve us. Just because you understand a concept doesn’t mean you can easily apply it in the moment.

The Importance of Curiosity Over Judgment

When we react, our natural inclination can be to judge ourselves harshly. We might think, “What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I get this right?” Unfortunately, judgment adds another layer of shame to our experiences. Instead, I invite you to embrace curiosity. Ask yourself questions like:

- What just happened within me?

- What did I believe that moment to mean?

- What was I trying to protect myself from?

These questions help us explore the emotions beneath the surface rather than reinforce negative self-talk. For example, if you felt anger when someone questioned your decision, perhaps underneath lies a fear of being judged or dismissed. Understanding these layers is crucial for personal growth.

The Power of the Pause

So, how do we cultivate this awareness? Enter the pause. The pause creates a space between what happens and how we respond. It allows us to step back and assess our feelings before acting on them. This doesn’t mean we won’t feel anger or hurt; it just means we give ourselves the opportunity to process those emotions more constructively.

Consider this: sometimes, a pause can be as simple as taking a deep breath or giving yourself a full day to think about a request. The duration doesn’t matter; what matters is the space it creates for reflection.

During that pause, ask yourself:

- What am I feeling right now?

- Is this reaction about the present situation, or is it tied to past experiences?

- What do I genuinely need in this moment?

An aligned response may not always keep everyone else comfortable, but it will honor your truth. It might mean saying, “Let me think about that,” or “I need a moment to gather my thoughts.”

A Simple Practice for the Pause

To implement the pause effectively, remember these three steps: pause, notice, choose.

  1.  Pause: Take a grounding breath and allow yourself time to process.
  2.  Notice: Check in with your body. Are your shoulders tense? Does your stomach feel uneasy? Recognizing these physical cues can illuminate what’s happening internally.
  3.  Choose: Reflect on how you want to respond if fear or obligation weren’t driving your choices. This conscious decision-making empowers you and aligns your actions with your true self.

Building Awareness

Instead of trying to tackle every automatic reaction at once, start with just one. Maybe it’s the defensiveness you feel when receiving feedback or the urge to apologize unnecessarily. Observe this reaction with curiosity: when does it appear? What physical sensations accompany it? What thoughts pass through your mind?

Every time you notice these patterns, you create an opportunity for change. The pause helps you reconnect with your inner self, allowing you to respond intentionally. Each moment of awareness strengthens your relationship with your inner voice.

Conclusion: A Journey of Self-Discovery
