Why You Keep Getting in Your Own Way
Have you ever known exactly what you wanted to do, made a plan, and then found yourself doing everything except taking the first step? You are not alone. And that pause does not automatically mean you are lazy, broken, or incapable of change. Sometimes the behavior we call self sabotage is an old attempt to protect us from something that feels uncertain.
In this episode of Meaningful Moments with Mai, we look beneath the patterns that keep us stuck and explore how compassion and self awareness can help us begin to choose differently.
What if the pattern is trying to protect you?
We often describe procrastination, pulling away, or shrinking from an opportunity as self sabotage. But instead of asking, “What is wrong with me?” try asking, “What might this behavior be trying to protect?”
Perhaps it is protecting you from judgment, rejection, disappointment, or uncertainty. Maybe you are putting off a project because being seen feels risky. Maybe you avoid looking at your finances because the numbers bring up fear. Or perhaps you want a healthier relationship, but closeness feels unfamiliar.
That does not mean every behavior has the same cause. It means our actions can hold clues. When we become curious about what is happening underneath, we can respond to the need behind the behavior instead of simply criticizing ourselves for having it.
Familiar is not always comfortable
We tend to assume that if something is good for us, it should feel good right away. But healthy change can feel strange before it feels natural. Rest, boundaries, receiving support, being seen, and stepping into success may all be unfamiliar experiences.
Think of an old pattern like a path through a familiar garden. You may know every turn, even if the path leads somewhere you no longer want to go. A new path can feel uncertain simply because you have not walked it yet. Familiar does not always mean healthy. It can mean you already know how to get through it.
So if you feel unsettled when life offers something better, that feeling is not proof you should turn back. It may be a sign that you are standing at a threshold. You are learning how to live beyond the pattern you once relied on.
Awareness is the beginning, not the finish line
An insight can be powerful. You might suddenly understand where a pattern began and think, “That is why I do this.” That awareness matters, but insight alone does not always change what happens when you are tired, stressed, or caught off guard.
Awareness helps you see the pattern. Integration is the practice of responding differently when it shows up. That practice takes repetition. Sometimes you choose a new response. Sometimes you slip back into the familiar one, notice what happened, and try again. Each moment of noticing gives you another chance to make a different choice.
Personal growth is rarely a perfect, straight line. It is more like tending a garden. You keep showing up, creating the conditions for something new, and giving yourself time to grow.
Look at the moment before you pull back
If you want to understand what you call self sabotage, pay attention to the moment just before the behavior. What happened right before you decided not to begin? What thought or feeling appeared? Did you imagine failing, or did you imagine succeeding and becoming more visible?
Success can bring its own questions. What if people expect more from me? What if I cannot maintain this? Will I still belong if I change? Those concerns can create hesitation even when you deeply want what is ahead. The behavior may look like procrastination from the outside, while underneath it is a response to uncertainty or fear.
Try asking, “What does moving forward seem to threaten?” You do not need to force an immediate answer. Give yourself room to notice what comes up. Perhaps you will find a limiting belief, an old expectation, or a worry that you might disappoint someone. The behavior tells you where to look, even if it does not tell you the whole story.
Let compassion create room for action
Compassion is not an excuse to stay stuck. It is a more useful place to begin. If you decide you are simply lazy, you may try to push harder and criticize yourself when that does not work. But if you discover that being visible feels unsafe, you can explore what support would make visibility feel more manageable.
This is where working with energetic blocks can begin: not by bulldozing through resistance, but by listening to the information it carries. Resistance may be asking, “Can we feel safe enough to move forward differently?” It may be pointing toward a fear or belief that deserves your attention.
An abundance mindset does not require pretending that fear is not there. It can mean believing that you have room to grow, receive support, and take the next step without needing to have the whole journey figured out.
Choose one small step
The next time you notice yourself getting in your own way, pause and ask, “What might I be protecting myself from right now?” Then consider, “What do I believe could happen if I move forward?” Finally, ask what would help you feel supported enough to take one small step.
Choose one area where you have been saying, “I know better. Why am I not doing better?” It might be your health, money, work, relationships, rest, or boundaries. Write down the behavior you have been judging. Then consider what it might be trying to protect. You do not have to force a perfect answer. Let curiosity do some of the work.
A small step could be opening the document, checking one number, asking for help, or setting aside ten minutes to rest. The goal is not to transform your whole life in a day. It is to make one choice that honors both where you have been and where you want to go.
Your pattern does not decide your future
You are not broken and you do not have to hate the patterns that helped you get through earlier seasons of life. You can acknowledge what they were trying to do, appreciate the protection they offered, and ask whether they still serve the person you are becoming.
The pattern may help explain your response, but it does not have to determine your future. With self awareness, compassion, and one supported step at a time, you can begin creating a new experience. Start where you are, and let that next small choice open the door.
